A Cook and Her Books

Shoppers at the Italian Market

Painting by Jack R Kaiser

The first time I saw my name in print, it was in a local rag called, To Market! The publisher was a friend of mine, and I didn’t make much money, but I got to keep the cookbook I chose to review, and since I was a cook at the time, I thought it was a good deal. In truth, I would have done it for nothing- that’s how great a thrill it was to see my name in print.

I only wrote 3 reviews before I left for Japan:

* ‘Good for your heart’ can be great for your tastebuds

*What’ll it be, Hon? Find the answer in the new WPEN cookbook

*Oprah’s diet: low-fat and luscious

The fourth missed the publishing deadline, and I had to buy the book: The Mediterranean Diet Cookbook, by Nancy Harmon Jenkins. I still use that cookbook, but I no longer have the review.

To Market! is gone, alas.
